Some states (not all) mandate short-term disability insurance, which covers illness and/or injury that occurs outside the workplace, (not to be confused with workers compensation) and calls for premiums to be paid through payroll taxes. The problems are that the benefits and duration periods are extremely limited and as mentioned above, some states do not require short-term disability at all. The solution is a short-term supplemental disability program that will provide coverage to employees in the states that do not require coverage and supplement coverage for those in the states that do.
